Free Will Revision

Dear Students

Is anybody out there? I have added three posts to help you with Free Will and Determinism revision. Please ask questions, respond, or just grunt. Any sign of life would be welcome. Don't just read. You must make notes and put things in your own words.

Questions: Is free will compatible with determinism? What are the implications of Hard Determinism? What are the attractions and problems associated with Libertarianism?

Also, any feedback on the first exam would be welcome. I wasn't in last Friday and don't even know what the questions were.

In your second exam you will have to answer the question on free will and the one on God and the World There is a link to the AQA site, so you can easily check out the details. Also, use the textbook.God and the World covers the following:
1.The argument from design
• Arguments for design based on apparent order and purpose and challenges to those arguments.
• Arguments from design (analogy, the inadequacies of naturalistic explanations) and challenges to those arguments.

2. The problem of evil
• That the existence of evil counts against the existence of an all loving and all powerful God.
Moral and natural evil and their relation to one another.
• Attempts to reconcile the evil we perceive with the existence of God (the free will defence, the best of all possible worlds, soul making and the afterlife).

3.The religious point of view
• Consideration of the claim that the world can accommodate different perspectives (‘seeing as’).
• The status of the religious hypothesis; is it a
‘hypothesis’ at all? Consideration of the claim that religious ‘belief’ mirrors the feelings, attitudes and
commitments of the religious rather than facts about the world

I have been revising free will so far, will be going on to God again tomorrow!
I am on page 320 of the text book, looking at criticisms of Sartre and I am starting to get a little confused where the paragraph starts 'This leads to the issue for libertarians.....' Up to now I have been fine, what is this trying to say?

Free Will and Determinism posts are much appreciated, thank you! Really very helpful and informative :)

First exam was brilliant, I just closed my eyes, held my breath and jiggled my pen for an hour and a half. Gawd knows what I wrote.

Matt: I haven't got the textbook with me at home, so can't help unless you tell me more.
